Nhung nhu(윤느) : The Best Bahn Mi Sandwich in Mullae

The space is compact and thoughtfully designed, often decorated with elements and color tones that evoke a subtle Vietnamese sensibility. Rather than functioning as a full-service restaurant, it is better suited for visitors who want to stop by for coffee or dessert in a relaxed setting.

Editor’s Tip

Mullae-dong has recently become a popular neighborhood among people in their 20s and 30s. Originally, it was filled with metal fabrication workshops and industrial facilities. About a decade ago, trendy restaurants and cafés began to appear one by one. Today, the area is a unique mix of long-established local eateries and newer, stylish spaces.

On weekdays, the narrow alleys are usually packed with cars belonging to people who work in the area, making parking very difficult. However, on weekday evenings and especially on weekends, most of the factories are closed, which leaves more available parking space. As a result, many visitors come to explore and spend time in the neighborhood during those hours.

윤느 is run by a Vietnamese owner and is more accurately described as a café rather than a full restaurant. It does not serve full meal dishes. Instead, the menu focuses on banh mi sandwiches, Vietnamese condensed milk coffee, condensed milk baguette, pudding, beverages, and tea.

Interestingly, many Vietnamese restaurants in Seoul do not serve banh mi at all. Even among those that do, it is not easy to find places that do it well. In that sense, Yoonne offers a notably good-quality banh mi. Customers can choose between pork and chicken fillings, but pork is more popular and may sell out in the evening.

The original name “NHUNG NHU” is likely pronounced “Yoonne.” Since many Koreans had difficulty reading the Vietnamese spelling, the owner later added a Korean outdoor sign. If the Korean pronunciation were written directly in English, it would likely be spelled “Yoon nue.”

You can walk from Exit 1 of Mullae Station on Line 2, or from Exit 1 of Sindorim Station on Line 1. In my experience, walking from Mullae Station is slightly faster.
If you walk from Sindorim Station, you can enjoy views of Dorimcheon Stream along the way.
The reason for explaining this is simple: if you arrived via Line 1, there is no real need to transfer to Line 2. The transfer time is roughly the same as the time it takes to get off at Sindorim Station and walk.

Main Menu Focus

The menu at Yoonne centers on the following items:

  • Banh mi sandwiches
  • Vietnamese condensed milk coffee (cà phê sữa đá)
  • Coconut coffee
  • Vietnamese-style beverages
  • Dessert selections

Flavor Profile

  • Banh mi with a focus on the texture and crispness of the baguette
  • Sweet and rich condensed milk coffee
  • Smooth beverage options that pair well with desserts

Rather than replicating a Vietnamese street-side restaurant experience, Yoonne blends elements of Vietnamese café culture with contemporary Korean café sensibilities.

Editor’s Tip

The baguette used for Vietnamese banh mi may look similar to a traditional French baguette, but it differs significantly in texture, structure, and formulation. These differences developed as the bread adapted to Vietnam’s climate, ingredients, and food culture.

1. Flour Composition
Vietnamese banh mi baguette
Traditionally, it often includes a portion of rice flour mixed with wheat flour.
This results in a lighter and more delicate texture.

Traditional French baguette
Made primarily from wheat flour, water, salt, and yeast (or natural starter), without rice flour.

The addition of rice flour reduces gluten strength, creating a lighter and crispier crumb structure.

2. Crust Thickness and Texture
Banh mi baguettes have a thin, extremely crisp crust.
French baguettes typically have a thicker and firmer crust.

Since banh mi sandwiches are filled generously, a thinner crust makes them easier to bite and more practical to eat.
